Storytime Themes | Dandelions & Roses - April 6, 2015.They had a lot of creative moments once I presented my very unusual elephant. (When I have a surplus of volunteers or nothing for them to do, they cut out simple crafts for days just like this!) This group was hugely enthusiastic and I was pleased to see that at least one daycare knew almost every song or rhyme that we did! And even though I had to do a last minute craft, the kids were really engaged by coloring their elephants. Luckily, I had these puppets cut out, stored away for a rainy day. My daycare storytime groups included three different daycares! Since we had such a large group, I had to quickly come up with another craft because I did not have enough supplies for the amount of kids that came. Her sincere thank-you at the end of storytime will remain one of the sweetest things I’ve ever encountered. My regular storytime kids had a great time with this theme! They loved the two books with interactive parts: “If You’re Happy and You Know It: Jungle Edition” and “From Head to Toe.” I had a new young lady this week who was an absolute delight - and she loved everything that we did from rhymes to songs to books to the craft. Thursday’s craft was purchased during a Michaels clearance sale. Maybe the veggie candy bar was ahead of its time. Its wrapper displayed peas, carrots, celery, and cabbage along with the promise, “Will Not Constipate.” Candy taglines may have improved over the century, but the prevalence of meal replacement chocolate bars has grown. The Vegetable Sandwich bar contained dehydrated vegetables covered with chocolate. Vegetable Sandwich Barĭuring the “golden age” of candy bars (1920s and ’30s), regional candy producers around the country experimented with various ingredients and marketing strategies. No other candy is quite the same, but the blogger Look What Mom Found made their own recipe for Squirrel Nut-Zippers that might be as good as the original. Named after a prohibition-era cocktail and originally produced by Squirrel Brand Company, the nutty-vanilla caramels were a penny candy akin to BB Bats and Tootsie Rolls. When Necco’s brands were picked over after the company’s closure last year, the poor Squirrel Nut-Zipper didn’t find a new manufacturing home. Though Fat Emma is long-gone, Mars’s copycat bars are still Halloween favorites. Soon after, Frank Mars whipped up some of his own “Minnesota nougat” for the Milky Way and 3 Musketeers bars. Pendergast Candy Company, of Minneapolis, used too much egg white in its nougat recipe in the early 1900s and accidentally invented the Fat Emma bar, the first to used fluffy nougat and so-named because of its girth. If you’re on the hunt for nostalgic gum, though, you might be able to get your fix with Beemans, Black Jack, and Clove gums, all of which are still produced. Although it became famous in the ’60s with the “Teaberry shuffle” commercials featuring Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, the gum had been around since the turn of the century. Clark’s Teaberry Gum (Clark Brothers Chewing Gum Company, The Saturday Evening Post, 1929)Ĭandy enthusiasts online have reported seeing Teaberry gum at specialty stores (even in the last year), but all other signs are pointing toward the wildly popular gum’s extinction. For years, the only alternative has been strawberry Broadway Rolls, but the company Iconic Candy has been working for years on a proper return of the Danish Ribbon. Danish Ribbonsĭanish Ribbons - or Delfa Rolls - were an imported strawberry licorice treat that candy lovers might remember seeing on shelves in the ’60s. The next best things might be U-No and Abba-Zaba bars, the still-produced candies out of Baffle’s original Oakland company, Cardinet. Finding an alternative to the Baffle Bar these days is a head-scratcher (though we welcome suggestions). Early ads suggested that hostesses slice a bar into pieces and arrange it on a plate for their next party. Inside its chocolate coating were walnuts, fudge, and some sort of jelly. Manufactured from around the 1920s to the ’70s, the Baffle Bar was a bit of a mystery “with all the tang of the great outdoors” and “zest that was born of a mountain wind,” hinting at its California origin. Richardson Brands, however, owns and produces Beechies, the Chiclets-like candy-coated gum Beech-Nut made years ago. You can’t find it - officially - anymore, unless you want to pay $37.49 for a decades-old pack on eBay. Beech-Nut gum was popular in the mid-century (and their peppermint flavor was “the pep-pep-peppiest one”). And it was named by paranormal researcher Fiona Broome, who wrongly recalled that late South African president, Nelson Mandela, had died in the 1980s after his imprisonment, when in fact, he passed in 2013.Īpparently, misremembering events and facts isn’t just exclusive to Broome. This eerie phenomenon where people collectively misremember events, historical facts and other famous pop culture moments is called the Mandela Effect. And as shocking as this discovery may feel in this very moment, you are actually not alone. If you remember Dorothy’s famous line in The Wizard of Oz as, "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore,” you would, in fact, be wrong. Its nickname, The Sobriety Stone, comes from a story based on the Greek god Bacchus. It received its name from the Greek word “not drunken”. Long viewed as a stone of royalty, it was used in crowns, rings, scepters and is still used by the Catholic bishops. Neolithic people in Europe used Amethyst as early as 25,000 BC, and in ancient Egypt it was made into beads. ~Placed around your home, office, mediation space creates a bubble of light and protection. Before meditation, you can use a singing bowl to align the energies of amethyst – the frequency of the singing bowl will help to align the crystal structure to direct energy more efficiently. It is an excellent stone for meditation and may be used for purification and regeneration on all levels of consciousness. Many of the hollow agates of southwestern Brazil and Uruguay contain a crop of amethyst crystals in the interior. Steve and Bucky's lives are inextricably bound, forever intertwined through what can only be described as fate. As 2014's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" - widely lauded as one of the all-time greatest Marvel movies - reveals, Bucky is alive too, recovered by the Nazi scientists of Hydra who made him into a super soldier and preserved him over the past 70 years through freezing him in cryogenic sleep. Of course, in the final moments of the movie, we learn Steve survived and is discovered frozen in ice 70 years later, in the present day.īut Steve isn't the only one who survived, and he certainly isn't the only biologically enhanced super soldier. By the end of "The First Avenger," both Steve and Bucky are presumed to be dead, as Steve sacrifices his life to save humanity from the overwhelming power of the Tesseract. All of this is cut short when Bucky appears to fall off the top of a train to his death on a mission, devastating Steve. "Captain America: The First Avenger" has just hit theaters, and we watch as Steve Rogers rescues his childhood best friend Bucky Barnes from Nazi captivity, followed by a glorious montage of the two supposedly platonic besties going Nazi-hunting in the 1940s at the height of World War II. Ikaris x Sersi parallels Steve x Bucky, before it Want a daily wrap-up of all the news and commentary Salon has to offer? Subscribe to our morning newsletter, Crash Course. Have we forgotten the entire "Captain America" trilogy, people? Or the whole plot of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," specifically? And, no, I'm not talking about Steve and Peggy, or even Steve and Natasha, though sparks may have flown between the two in "The Winter Soldier." I'm talking about Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), the Winter Soldier himself. While this can't be denied, it's not the first love story-centric Marvel flick. But Moore makes the case for why, unlike these other romances, Ikaris and Sersi's love is the foundation of "Eternals," making the movie arguably not just an action film, but a romance, supposedly for the first time ever in the MCU. Moore acknowledges the love stories of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), a relationship that Steve gave up everything for in the final moments of "Endgame" and the unnecessary romantic subplot between Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). This is not to say that other MCU films have lacked in some romantic content. Because of this long view of mankind's development, "Eternals" has been touted as a "love letter to Earth and humanity," as Angelina Jolie, who plays the Eternal Thena, has put it.īut producer Nate Moore also calls it "the first movie that's really built around a romance as the central relationship." In the film, Richard Madden's Ikaris and Gemma Chan's Sersi, two of the most powerful of the 10 Eternals have a love story that spans thousands of years, which is certainly a focal point from start to finish. The Chloé Zhao-directed film follows ancient, supernatural beings who've defended Earth from creatures called Deviants for millennia and who reunite in the present day to save humanity from the latest catastrophe. Much has been made of "Eternals" being a "different" kind of Marvel movie, and in many ways, it is. The following contains spoilers for "Eternals" and the "Captain America" films. There are lots of different URL shortening options out there, and I limited my search to easy-to-set-up, standalone services. Many basic or free plans for a short link generator only let you change the last part of the URL (so you get ), while the more business-focused services enable you to use a custom domain (so you get squirre.ls/awesome). This means you can make your URLs more relevant, or use different links in multiple ads or social media posts to compare click-through rates. The best URL shorteners all allow you to customize your shortened URLs. Free services tend to have basic click tracking (although there's often a time limit and a limit on the number of total clicks tracked), while premium marketing options will collect as much data as possible-and even allow you to serve different URLs to people in different places or using different devices.Ĭustomization of URLs. Like with most marketing services, the more detailed and powerful these analytics, the higher the cost. If you use a URL shortener, however, you'll have a unique short URL, so you'll also be able to see how many clicks the link gets, where they're coming from, and what devices people are using. If you share a link to someone else's blog post with your audience, for example, you won't know much about how many people-and who-click through all that data will be in the other person's analytics account. In addition to that basic capability, here are the features I was looking for in a link shortener:Īnalytics and click tracking. If you're just sending things to your friends, you only really need to worry about URL shortening if you're exclusively using SMS. Twitter, for example, automatically shortens any shared links with its t.co shortening service ( at least when it works), while iMessage obscures any links behind a preview card. While URL shorteners used to be useful for shortening longer links to fit character limits on social media and messaging apps, a lot of platforms take care of that for you. And it's not just for ads for roommates URL shorteners allow you to provide a typable link on a business card, print ad, podcast interview, or any other situation where someone can't just click on a nice hyperlink. This shortened link means whoever sees your ad has an easy-to-type URL to visit, rather than having to type some long, unintelligible string of text where they're almost guaranteed to make a mistake. For example, if you're making an ad for a roommate, you can take something like, and turn it into.
